I headed downstairs, my mind spinning with everything I’d learned from Nugget. Anton had been at the coin store right before Harold died, arguing with him over the rare Monterey Nugget coin. And he’d been there with Ross Massey, who clearly had some kind of shady business going on.

I found Evie in the back room, refilling treat jars. She glanced up with a smile. “Hey, Mom, Landon just popped over to his office to check on that cabinet job. He’ll be back soon.”

Before I could respond, Josephine entered the store room and cut in briskly. “Well? Did you discover anything useful from the cat?”

I peeked out the storeroom door and looked around. Once I was sure no one was nearby to overhear, I quickly relayed the details of my conversation with Nugget.

“Harold’s brother Anton was there arguing with him within two days of his death. And even more interesting, Harold’s lawyer, Ross Massey, might’ve been there too.” I raised my eyebrows at Josephine.

“How very peculiar. A lawyer contracted in both sides of a brotherly squabble and winding up with two clients on opposite sides in the course of a week. One dead.” Josephine tapped a manicured nail against her chin. “Highly irregular. More than a little suspect.”

Evie looked back and forth between us. “So you think Anton or Ross could have killed Harold? But why? What’s the motive?”

Josephine waved a hand airily. “Oh, who knows? Greed, resentment, a soured business deal—take your pick.” She inspected her nails idly. “Although Ross’s presence at the actual crime scene is awfully incriminating. I’d like to know how he explains that away.”

“But we still have no idea who dropped off Nugget. We can’t point fingers until we figure out who that woman is on the security footage, and we’re clearly missing a huge part of the story.”

Josephine nodded thoughtfully. “An excellent point, Evie. We’re still missing a major piece of the puzzle. The very first piece, actually.”

Just then, the front door opened again, and Landon hurried in.

“Success! My manager says they’ll be done with the joisting by tomorrow,” he announced triumphantly. Then he noticed our serious expressions. “Hey, did I miss something?”

“Only Ellie uncovering a veritable hive of lies and deception,” Josephine said wryly. “Do keep up, darling.”

Landon looked at me questioningly. I quickly summarized everything we’d learned from Nugget, and Evie repeated her observations.

“Huh.” He scratched his head. “Well, it seems fishy that Anton and Massey were at the coin store in the days before Harold died. But Evie’s right. We can’t make any accusations without figuring out the mystery woman’s role in all this.”

I nodded. “We need more information before we can start pointing fingers at anyone. We still don’t even have a motive.”

“Ben’s murder was easier,” Evie admitted. “Everyone had a motive.”

“They’re both effectively the same problem, and both are problems that need to be solved.” Josephine checked the dainty gold watch on her wrist. “Well, duty calls. I’m expected back at the firm this afternoon. Do keep me updated if you uncover anything else juicy.
